Functional programming for sustainable solutions

We write most of our code in Elm which eventually compiles to Javascript. Its static type system and functional paradigms make the code stable and easy to maintain, which increases our productivity and yields better long-term results. Elm is an excellent example of how functional programming can create long-term sustainable and efficient solutions.

The foundation for future-proof solutions

Elm is a strictly typed and functional language that neither allows you to write compilation errors nor runtime errors. As long as your variables and functions use the correct types, the code will both run and output everything from a small value to an entire website.

At Webbhuset, we began using Elm in 2017 when we were introduced to it by our CTO, Albert Dahlin. Since then, we use Elm in all projects we undertake, and thanks to Elm, we have been able to build our unique Fusion Storefront, which often serves as a foundation in our successful new client projects.

A terminal showing an Elm compilation error, an example of how functional programming ensures type control. List.drop receives the wrong type on its first argument, where String.toInt returns a Maybe Int while List.drop requires an Int. The error suggests using Maybe.withDefault to handle this.

Our developers can use Elm to create high-quality code. The language's clear structure, based on the principles of functional programming, helps ensure that our solutions are not only fast and stable but also dynamic and scalable. Additionally, the clear structure helps us identify and easily correct potential compilation errors.

The advantages of Elm

Elm is specifically designed for building web-based user interfaces that are reliable and easy to maintain. Here are some reasons why we use Elm in all our projects and why it is such a powerful tool in functional programming:

No run-time errors

One of the most talked-about advantages of Elm is that it guarantees no runtime errors. This means that if the code compiles, it will run without issues like type errors or null-pointer exceptions. This increases the reliability of applications and reduces the need for troubleshooting.

Performance

Elm is optimized to be fast. It compiles to highly efficient JavaScript, providing high performance in the browser. Additionally, Elm uses a "virtual DOM" implementation that minimizes unnecessary re-renders and updates of the interface, further enhancing performance.

Easy to maintain

Due to the strict type system and architecture in Elm, the code becomes much easier to maintain. As applications grow, it becomes easier to make changes without unintentionally introducing bugs, because Elm ensures that the compiler catches potential errors before the code runs.

Compilation with error messages

Clear error messages

Elm has a powerful type system that makes it easy to catch errors already at compilation. It also provides very clear and helpful error messages, often including suggestions on how to correct the error. This makes the development process faster and less frustrating.

We have previously organized several Elm meetups and in February 2024 we hosted an exclusive meetup with the creators of Elm, Evan Czaplicki and Tereza Sokol! Besides meetups focused on Elm, we have also hosted meetups themed Advent of Code. We have also had the honor of inviting other notable individuals like Daniel Stenberg, the creator of cURL.

Don't miss our upcoming meetups! Join our Meetup group where you can network, exchange ideas, and gain insights from leading experts or other tech enthusiasts like us.
