Webbhuset's sustainability work

Sustainable e‑commerce solutions

We believe that digitalization is not just about developing innovative solutions, but also about doing so in a way that considers both society and the environment. Webbhuset strives to create sustainable e‑commerce solutions that combine technical innovation with long-term sustainability. As a leading e‑commerce provider of future-proof e‑commerce, we actively work to implement solutions that promote a more responsible and resource-efficient e‑commerce. Here are some ways we contribute to a more sustainable digital future:

1. Green web development

Webbhuset strives to create websites and digital applications that define a more sustainable e‑commerce. By optimizing code, using resource-efficient technologies, keeping track of the latest green trends in web development, and implementing efficient web hosting, we reduce our customers' energy consumption and climate footprint.

Our customers' sustainable e‑commerce solutions are fast and scalable and energy-efficient thanks to our optimized codebase. This way, we manage to contribute a development environment that means a lower environmental impact.

We primarily use the functional programming language Elm, which means that our websites primarily function without side effects, and the e‑commerce solutions we build require less data compared to more popular JavaScript frameworks like React. Thanks to designing most websites with Tailwind CSS, only the scripts necessary for the website's use are included. This means other data is ignored, and the design file is significantly smaller compared to other frameworks.

2. Cloud-based options and dedicated servers

We recommend and implement cloud-based solutions that can reduce the need for physical servers and infrastructure. This is an important part of our work developing sustainable e‑commerce solutions, as it helps reduce energy consumption and emissions associated with traditional server operations.

We are a proud partner of the service company GleSYS, which hosts many of our projects. All electricity purchased for GleSYS data centers and offices is environmentally certified electricity. This means it is 100% renewable, meets strict environmental standards, and funds are allocated for environmental improvement measures. All surplus energy from GleSYS data centers is recycled by being sent out to the district heating networks in Falkenberg and Stockholm.

Colleagues from Webbhuset and GleSYS converse on a Webbhuset balcony in Gothenburg about sustainable digital solutions and e-commerce.

Thanks to GleSYS, we and our customers are connected to the world's most sustainable server hall.

3. Workflows

Webbhuset's work routines are digital, and almost all our processes, customer meetings, and agile work methods take place primarily digitally. This means fewer requirements for physical movement, more efficient work, and less environmental impact by primarily holding meetings via telephone or video call before physical meetings. By promoting paperless communication, we contribute to reducing our climate footprint and contribute to a digital and modern workflow.

Remote: We have the advantage of working digitally and can work from home to the extent we wish, reducing the need for daily commuting.

4. Energy consumption and efficiency

Striving for faster websites without compromising image quality or creating unnecessarily large cache files is a constant goal for us at Webbhuset. Therefore, we develop sustainable e‑commerce solutions that are both energy-efficient and optimized for performance.

One example of this is that our CMS solution automatically converts all uploaded images from older formats like JPEG and PNG to the modern webP format, reducing file size without degrading image quality. This is important because images and other media are often the biggest reason for long loading times. By minimizing resource-intensive features and processes, we help your company save energy and resources during long-term use.

Thanks to our collaboration with GleSYS, all our customers can rest assured that their data is handled with sustainability in focus. Their hosting is environmentally certified with Bra Miljöval™ and their continuous environmental work allows us and our customers to be part of the world's greenest server halls.

5. Data protection and privacy

We are certified in Information Security ISO 27001 and prioritize data protection and privacy highly when developing digital solutions. This certification means that we contribute to sustainable infrastructure on a larger scale since the certification is in line with one of the UN's global sustainability goals. By implementing secure and ethical methods for data sharing and storage, we ensure that your users and customers' information is handled responsibly.

6. Education and awareness

We regularly share knowledge and information about how digitalization can be carried out sustainably. By raising awareness, we help our customers make informed decisions that promote both their business and our shared planet.

An example of how we work with this is through our Webinar organized on November 14, 2023. There, we conversed with industry organizations focused on sustainability within the e‑commerce sector and who gladly share their work with others. Because sustainability is not just a trend. It is a necessity. Therefore, it is vital for us at Webbhuset to both receive and share how companies can work towards sustainable e‑commerce.
